Bahama Hurricane Relief

FAAWO has assisted with the Bahama recovery coordination. Working together have been:

- Cat Depot, Sarasota
- Humane Society of Naples
- Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County, Port Charlotte
- Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue, Bradenton
Special acknowledgement goes to Rich Anderson, CEO, Peggy Adams Animal Rescue, for coordinating the successful transport of 158 dogs and cats from the Bahama Humane Society to Florida shelters. Rich worked with the Bahama Humane Society, Nassau, IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) and Wings of Rescue.
The dogs and cats now receiving TLC in Florida Shelters will be held for a quarantine period before available for adoption. Each agency, based on the recommendations of their veterinary team, will determine the length of quarantine of 14 to 30 days.
The Bahama dogs and cats received on September 17th were cleared for adoption. Future transports may include lost pets that may need to be held to provide them a chance to be reunited with their owners.
Foster Care for Bahama Evacuees with Pets
Evacuees relocating to the US may have difficulty finding temporary housing that permits their pets. We aren’t certain as to how large the need may be, but we’re attempting to identify member organizations that may be able to assist with foster care.
Let us know if you have foster volunteers that may be willing to provide temporary care for an evacuee’s pets. Email us at [email protected]. Provide your contact name, your agencies address and phone numbers.

The Florida Association of Animal Welfare Organizations (FAAWA) is committed to assisting the Bahama animals and shelters impacted by Dorian. We hope to provide you with realtime information on our efforts, and share how you may support the Bahamian shelters, and lost pets as we learn about their needs.
FAAWO will be coordinating with the International Fund for Animal Welfare IFAW, Great Good, Maddie's Fund Shelter Medicine Program UF, and national animal welfare organization.

For Hurricane Dorian, Katherine Shenar will be serving as the primary contact for The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement, AAWA (formerly SAWA), collaborating with Florida animal welfare emergency response leadership, to ensure the members of The Association receive timely and accurate information.
As Hurricane Dorian approaches the Florida coast, there is a need for Florida shelters to decrease their existing populations to make space for incoming animals displaced by the storm. If your organization has the desire and capacity to intake a large-scale transport (25+ animals), this Google Doc form has been created to capture details from animal organizations wishing to receive animals before as well as after the storm hits. Air transports are being coordinated based on flight availability and airports. If your organization is interested, please complete all the required fields.

Emergency Response Team Offer - this is for those shelters wishing to send an emergency response team of trained professional staff and volunteers to the impacted area. Link to form is here:

Shelters Seeking Transport & Assistance - this is for shelters affected by the storm who have filed a mission request with their EOC and are hoping for resources including donated supplies, additional staffing for emergency sheltering, and transport of animals out of their population. Florida Shelters Animal Acceptance Offer (fewer than 25 animals)Thank you for your offer to help other Florida animal shelters and the animals of the Bahomas impacted by Hurricane Dorian. Please complete this survey if you are the decision maker for a Florida animal shelter or rescue that can accept a small animal transport (less than 25 animals) from another Florida agency or the Bahamas. Your organization contact and capacity information will be held confidentially in a database only accessed by proper authorities designated to assist in animal evacuation efforts. These transports are small (less than 25 animals) and primarily dogs/cats or puppies/kittens and other companion pets. Link to register:

Bahama Hurricane Relief
The Government and people of the Islands of The Bahamas are appreciative of all the inquiries, concerns and generous support we have received thus far in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.
Hurricane Dorian has left a devastating blow to two of our major islands -- Grand Bahama and Abaco. Many homes have been destroyed, our landscape damaged, and we are extremely saddened by the loss of lives. The spirit and resolve of our people remain strong, and we will continue to help everyone impacted with relief efforts.
